Tragic accident at Moscow Raceway’s WSBK

During Sunday’s FIM World Supersport race, an incident in the afternoon’s  race led to the death of young Italian rider, Andrea Antonelli. Andrea was 25-years old, from Castiglione del Lago in Italy.

The Team Goeleven Kawasaki rider suffered a serious accident on the straight between Turn 14 and Turn 15 wherein he sustained critical injuries.

The race was stopped with the red flag and the rider was immediately taken to an ambulance where medical staff worked to resuscitate him. Despite their efforts, Andrea sadly succumbed to his injuries at 2.10pm local time.

The remainder of the Russian WSBK round was cancelled as a mark of respect.

Race one of World Superbike conducted earlier in the day saw the BMW Motorrad Motorsport works riders Marco Melandri and Chaz Davies finish first and second. Ayrton Badovini (Team Ducati Alstare) brought the 1199 Panigale R to a long-awaited first podium finish, thanks to an impressive performance in the last part of the race.
