Supermoto: Troy Bayliss in doubt for Australian championship

The rich history of motorcycle racing in the Hunter Region will add another chapter with the staging of the 2015 Watson Demolition and Earthworks Australian Supermoto Championships, June 13-14.

The course will be constructed along part of Newcastle’s harbour foreshore, a short distance from where the Pasha Bulker famously grounded on Nobbys Beach in 2007.

Promoting the event is local motorcycle dealer Graeme Boyd, most recently associated with staging speedway meetings at Newcastle Showground.

This month he will stage an event that he feels will put the spotlight on his home city.

“It’s an iconic part of the city, and not just because of the Pasha Bulker,” Boyd said.

There is currently no news on whether Troy Bayliss will be back to defend his two titles from last year’s championship meeting at Proserpine after recently suffering a fractured ankle at the AMA Pro Flat Track Championships in Sacramento, California.

Three-time former World Speedway Champion Jason Crump will join Superbike and MotoGP legend Chris Vermeulen on the hybrid circuit.

English riders Chris Hodgson and Lewis Cornish are also making the trip to Newcastle, and both come with good supermoto credentials.

One of the feature attractions of supermoto racing is the spectacle appeals to riders across the full spectrum of motorcycle competition.

Multi Australian Dirt Track championship winners Luke Richards and Matthew Davies have entered, while former motocross star Danny Ham will take on other big names from the past in the veterans’ classes.

“General admission for spectators will be free, so they will have the chance to watch some world class riders and then between races take in the beauty of the harbour foreshore and looking up to Nobbys headland,” Boyd Said.

The road along the harbour foreshore will make up much of the track with the dirt section constructed in parkland just over the road from the harbour and picturesque Nobbys Beach.

Entries for the supermoto championship meeting will still be accepted up until June 5, but only online or by email.
