Can-Am Spyder ups the ante

The 2014 Can-Am Spyder RT has introduced a completely new 1330cc Rotax ACE Triple T in-line triple engine mated to a new six-speed transmission, available in manual and semi-automatic versions.

BRP’s exclusive ACE (Advanced Combustion Efficiency) technology maximizes every aspect of the engine, from the valve train, to the bore and stroke design to mechanical friction being reduced. Peak power at 7,250 RPM is 115 hp (85.8 kW), while putting out 130.1 Nm of torque at just 5,000 RPM. With this new engine and transmission combination, the 2014 Spyder RT delivers the ultimate in three-wheel touring performance and comfort.

The new six-speed gearbox with foot shift and manual clutch (SM6) comes standard on the base Spyder RT roadster and includes reverse. A semi-automatic, six-speed (including reverse) electronic transmission (SE6) requires no clutching or manual shifts and is available on all the other Spyder RT roadster variations. Shifting is done via the left thumb and left forefinger. This transmission allows the rider to cruise comfortably at freeway speeds, and can roll through towns in equal comfort. Cruising RPM has dropped from 4,700 RPM to 3,000 RPM.

While the new engine and transmission represents the big updates to the 2014 Spyder RT, this vehicle family separates itself from the other Spyder models thanks to its luxury-car-inspired composition and distinct outer form. This distinguishing style creates a fit-and-finish that’s unique to the industry and attention grabbing. Feature comforts include industry-leading Dynamic Power Steering (DPS™), electronic cruise control, 155L of onboard storage, passenger-themed ergonomics, adjustable electric windshield, wind deflectors, heated grips, new high-end saddle with integrated lumbar supports – the 2014 saddle is also backrest ready from the factory.

The Can-Am Spyder RT roadster is available in three packages (standard Spyder RT, Spyder RT-S and Spyder RT Limited). The standard Spyder RT is basis for each model, but then each package adds of technology and an enhanced level of sophistication. Add-ons include such items as: footboards, new fender design, push- button controls, adjustable rear air suspension, GPS navigation, LED lighting, exclusive colours, exclusive wheels and more.

In addition, updates to the cooling system not only improve aerodynamic efficiency, but driver and passenger comfort as well. All told, with these updates, the ultimate touring Spyder gets up to 406 km on a tank before one even needs to think about looking for a petrol station. In addition, a new ECO mode smart assist system can be turned on by the rider to further improve fuel economy by indicating precisely where the shift points should be for maximum fuel efficiency.

Watch out for a full review of the new Spyder in a coming edition of Cycle Torque.
