Sykes breaks Corser's lap record to take pole in Misano

At the Misano World Circuit – Marco Simoncelli, Kawasaki Racing’s Tom Sykes has broken Troy Corser’s four-year old lap record with a time of 1min 34.883s to claim his second World Superbike pole for 2014.

The reigning world champion will be joined on the front row by Ducati’s Davide Giugliano who put in an impressive time of 1min 35.079s, and Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing).

Loris Baz improved on his final lap to head up the second row with Marco Melandri and Toni Elias.

Chaz Davies leads row three with Jonathan Rea and Eugene Laverty as Honda and Suzuki struggled to mount a front-running challenge, while Niccolo Canepa was the sole EVO rider to progress to SP2 before going on to qualify in tenth, ahead of Alex Lowes and Leon Haslam.

Outside the top twelve, EVO leader David Salom will get underway in 13th, ahead of Matteo Baiocco and Ayrton Badovini. Australian Bryan Staring (Iron Brain Kawasaki) will start from 24th position.

World Supersport

Jules Cluzel (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) set a blistering pace to claim pole position ahead of championship leader Michael van der Mark (Pata Honda World Supersport) and Italian Raffaele De Rosa (CIA Insurance Honda).

Kenan Sofuoglu had the 7th Supersport championship Pole Position of the year snatched away from him in the closing moments with the former multiple champion crashing his Mahi Racing Team India Kawasaki after looking comfortable at the top of the timing sheet. The Turk would eventually finish 4th.

Ratthapark Wilairot (Core PTR Honda) was an impressive fifth ahead of Lorenzo Zanetti (Pata Honda World Supersport Team) who improved at the end of the 45 minute thriller.

Title contender Florian Marino (Kawasaki Intermoto) starts in seventh place, just ahead of team-mate PJ Jacobsen, while Roberto Tamburini and Jack Kennedy (CIA Insurance Honda) round out the top ten, the latter doing so despite a crash.
